2017 Sangiovese Riserva (6 bottle limit)
Vineyard: The West Terrace of a hillside planted in 1992. It is Sangiovese Gross, the clone responsible for the great Brunello di Montalcino wines in Tuscany. This is consistently one of our best vineyard sites.
Vintage: 2017 is second consecutive vintage we experienced cool August and early September weather, which provided extra "hangtime" to deveplop more intense flavors and structure.
Winemaking: De-stemmed as whole berries but not crushed. After a five day cold soak, fermentation begins by indigenous yeasts. After fermenttion the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 13 months, 35 percent new.
By far our best Sangiovese comes from this "West Terrace" Hillside vineyard, planted in 1992. Now that the vnes are getting older it produces really complelling, structured, dare I say Brunello-like Sangiovese. Cool August weather really allowed our Sangiovese to develop a deeper fruit compenent than in 2016 yet it definitely has the depth and tannin to age for many years (at least 10) to come. I guess as Untis, we are genetically pre-disposed to love Sangiovese. That notwithdatanding, this might be my favorite Unti wine ever.
