2016 GRENACHE BLANC

VINEYARD: In 2004, after tasting through several lots of white Rhône varietal wines at Nova Vine Nursery, we chose to plant Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, and Vermentino. All three of these varieties are native to the Mediterranean areas of Europe, and as such, tend to retain natural acidity and mineral character in warmer climates. Grenache Blanc is one of the key components to Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc and the white wine from Spain’s Priorat. We have about one-half acre planted to Grenache Blanc.

HARVEST & VINIFICATION: 2016 was an excellent vintage for all of our white grape varieties. A mild winter and warm spring accelerated ripening resulting in another early harvest. The Grenache Blanc was picked September 8th. We try to harvest our whites between 21.5 and 22.5 brix level sugar. The white grapes here are de-stemmed and whole cluster pressed. The juice is allowed to settle for 24 hours prior to fermentation, which begins spontaneously 5 days later with indigenous yeast. We ferment our whites in stainless steel tanks and concrete eggs at temperatures below 70 degrees to retain bright aromas. Concrete tanks offer some of the oxidative benefits of oak without imparting wood flavor. We prevented the wine from going through malolactic fermentation thereby preserving the bright natural acidity in this steely white.

STYLE & DESCRIPTION: 2016 was the best vintage yet for all of our white grapes, especially our Grenache Blanc. This is the second year we have bottled Grenache Blanc on its own. Grenache Blanc is ordinarily somewhat limited in complexity but has great minerality and texture. In 2016, our GB is floral and very expressive with incredible intensity. Why don’t we have more of this planted?
